Truly an inspirational event, Peace Through Yoga is happening for the second time ever on 1 June 2008. Celebrating the Soroptimist focus areas of health and international goodwill, Peace Through Yoga brings together three SI clubs. Peace Through Yoga was an event launched by SIPJ last year and this year, we are joining together with our sister clubs, Bangsar and Shah Alam to bring this event to the next level.

This year, at least 400 participants from old folks’ homes, orphanages and members of the public will be participating in a mass yoga exercise. We are also inviting the handicapped and wheelchair bound to join us and show that anyone can enjoy yoga.

The event aims to raise funds for several worthy projects. These causes include benefiting the street children of Bandung, SHINE (Supporting Hope In Education) and a Youth Outreach Program for underprivileged youths.

The three SI clubs are also working together in a project called '3 Clubs, 1 heart', where funds raised will go towards buying a van for the handicapped at Rumah Sinar in Janda Baik.

As a gesture of international goodwill, our yoga lead for the day will be from Bandung, Indonesia and the yoga session will be lead in Malay.

We are seeking sponsors for this event. Sponsorship is required for:

  1. T-shirts worn by participants
  2. Stage, Backdrop
  3. Sound System
  4. Refreshments
  5. Transportation for welfare homes to attend this event
  6. Tents for yoga workshop, refreshments, first aid.

Many thanks to our sponsors (in alphabetical order):

To raise funds, we will be selling t-shirts which are priced at RM50 each, and specially designed by SIPJ members, to the public. The t-shirts represent the ‘passport’ or ticket to participate at the Yoga Charity event on that day. Therefore, any individual who wishes to join this charity event must purchase this t-shirt. All three SI clubs will take the responsibility to sell the t-shirts to the public.

T-shirts can be ordered via email at info@sipj.org. Please state your size. Sizes are as follows:

1. Kids (S)
2. Kids (L)

4. Baby T (M)
5. Regular (S)
6. Regular (M)
7. Regular (L)

We also welcome yoga practitioners who can volunteer to help out with the crowds. Please contact Iza, our project lead and yoga expert, on 012 216 0600 if you would like to volunteer. Commitments are to turn up for rehearsals on 31 May at KLPAC at 4pm and on the day itself, 1 June, at 7am until closing at midday. It would be appreciated if volunteers could also purchase a t-shirt too.

COCOON YOGA and YOGA LEAF’s wish list

Donation to street kids at Bandung: Food and Medicine.

SI Clubs’ wish list (Total: RM50,000.00 or more)

  1. Project Rumah Sinar – to provide customised transportation (Van) for this school for the handicapped, which is based in Janda Baik. The children are currently in an isolated area and this van which should be able to accommodate wheel chairs, and customised with ramps or a wheelchair lift, will help the children to enjoy mobility and get exposure via outings and social trips. Currently, the centre’s staff only have a kancil to ferry the children to and fro from their homes to the centre. The van would greatly help them to save time and resources.
  1. Project SHINE (Supporting Hope in Education) - providing reading skills to underprivileged children in shelter homes.
  1. 'Youth Against Social Ills' Youth Outreach Program – providing talks and workshops by professionals to teenagers, focusing on risky behaviours, drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, gender sensitisation etc.Our first program for 2008 will be on 14 June and depending on funds, we plan to hold another one later in the year.

We truly thank you for your contribution. Your generosity will go a long way to helping many more lives and making a real difference to the various community projects listed above.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Both these not-for-profit organisations are joining together to present a one day event to promote peace through yoga.

Why yoga?

Yoga is a non-religious, non-denominational practice. Rather, it is an ancient way of life, aimed at developing the mind, body and spirit with an emphasis on harmony – the perfect embodiment of peace. This one day event will have fun activities involving yoga exercises and workshops on related topics. A complete family event, there will be stalls selling food and gifts with proceeds going towards the various projects detailed below.

WHAT IS IT FOR?
This objective of this programme is three-fold:

  1. To raise much-needed funds for several very worthy causes which all share the common aim of benefiting those who need assistance, on the basis of health and education;
  1. To provide a beautiful, loving and healing day for orphans, single mothers and senior citizens to show that the world cares!
  1. To send a much needed message of peace to all Malaysians and citizens of the world!

And of course to have fun doing it! Join us, please!
